As with many things, there are probably tradeoffs involved. With Notes 8, IBM probably views the Java/Eclipse-based client as a portal of sorts -- something that people will start up once and leave running all day. In that case, the somewhat longer startup time is no big deal. That is how it has turned out with my users, anyway. In fact, most of them leave their client up all week! Although they certainly notice the longer startup time, they're willing to accept that in exchange for the improved interface, functionality, and forward-looking features of ND8 and beyond. The only real complaint I've had so far is regarding the "sticky names" problem in Recent Contacts. And the few users I have who are still using the Basic client are anxious (even envious!) for their computers to be upgraded so they, too, can run the Eclipse client just like their coworkers.
I think the Notes client will be around for a very long while. For a small-to-medium size business, there's really no need for web apps when the client/server model works very nicely. My users don't care if it runs on the client or the web -- as long as it works well and lets them get their jobs done.
